You wake up and your jaw already feels worked. The masseter is tender. Opening wide for a yawn hurts a little. Coffee helps the brain. It does not help the cheek.
So you search teeth grinding self massage. You want to know if hands on the jaw can undo a night of grinding, or if you are just poking at a problem that belongs to a dentist.
This is that answer. What self-massage can do for a sore jaw after grinding, what it cannot do, and when a guided class is the next step. It is self-care education, not a diagnosis. It will not stop nighttime grinding. It will not replace a night guard. It will not fix TMJ or TMJD.
In this guide
Educational self-massage only. This is not a substitute for medical or dental care. Stop if pain increases. See a qualified clinician for persistent jaw, ear, or head pain, locking, or anything you cannot explain. Read the medical disclaimer.
Grinding and clenching, in plain words
Grinding is teeth working against teeth, often at night. Clenching is a sustained bite, day or night, without the scrape. Plenty of people do both. You do not need a lab label to notice a sore jaw in the morning.
Both patterns load the chewing muscles. The masseter is the thick one on the cheek, halfway between cheekbone and jaw angle when you bite down. After a grind night, that bulge can feel dense, bruised, or tired. The temple can complain too. That is the same referral pattern we covered in Can a Tight Jaw Cause Tension Headaches?.
Bruxism is the clinical word you will see on dental sites. This post is not a bruxism diagnosis. It is muscle care context for a jaw that feels sore after hard work it did while you slept.
What massage can and cannot do
Hands on the muscle can help a braced masseter soften. After a grind night, that can take the edge off morning soreness. Dull, stay-with-it pressure is the goal. Sharp, electrical, or push-through-it is how a sore jaw gets angrier.
Massage does not stop the grinding. It does not reprogram sleep. It does not protect enamel. A night guard, if your dentist gave you one, still does that job. Massage and a guard solve different problems. Keep the guard.
Massage also does not replace a dental exam. Worn teeth, cracked fillings, a bite that has changed, or grinding that is new and loud are dentist territory. For plain-language background on grinding, the ADA page on teeth grinding is a calm place to start.
Self-massage will not cure bruxism. Anyone saying otherwise is selling hope, not a plan.
Keep the night guard
If your dentist fitted you with a guard, wear it as instructed. Self-massage is not a reason to leave it in the drawer.
A guard protects teeth. Soft tissue work addresses muscle that got overloaded. Using both, when you have been told to, is not a contradiction. Dropping the guard because your cheek feels better after circles is how enamel loses.
If you do not have a guard and your dentist has suggested one, that conversation stays with them. This page will not talk you out of it.
One thing you can do today

You do not need a new grinding protocol. You need the outside starter we already published, done gently, on a jaw that is sore rather than sharp.
Go to How to Massage Your Masseter at Home. Do that one starter. Stay off the joint. Stop if it goes sharp.
That is the whole today list. Do not add a ten-step morning routine, temple grinding, or inside-the-mouth experiments because a video did.
If the outside work is not enough, that is expected. Intraoral work belongs in class. The safety version of that conversation is here: Intraoral Massage at Home.
If you want guided work on this muscle, Release Your Jaw is the full class. $247, lifetime access.
Before you put hands on your face
Soreness after grinding is common. It is not a free pass to work through warning signs.
Skip jaw self-massage, and see a dentist, PT, or physician instead, if:
You have an acute jaw injury, bruise, or recent trauma
You have an active infection (dental, sinus, or skin) near the jaw, or sores inside the mouth
You have had recent dental work, oral surgery, or extractions that have not fully healed
You notice unexplained swelling, numbness, a new lump, or pain that is getting worse
Your jaw locks open or closed
Your teeth feel loose, cracked, or newly sensitive in a way that worries you
Do not push through those. A sore jaw from grinding can wait a day. A lock or a cracked tooth should not.
When to see a dentist
See a dentist if grinding is new, loud enough to wake someone, or paired with tooth damage. See someone if morning pain is getting worse across weeks, not easing with rest and gentle outside work. See someone if you have locking, unexplained swelling, or numbness.
A PT who works with jaws can matter too, especially when the muscle story is loud and the teeth are already protected. This blog post cannot sort that referral for you.
What a guided class covers
Brooke Neborsky, LMT, built Release Your Jaw for people who are done guessing at a sore jaw.
Lesson 1 is breath and the clench cycle. Lesson 7 is the full external jaw sequence, beyond one starter. Lesson 8 is intra-oral work, including muscles you cannot reach well from the outside. Lesson 12 is what to do the morning the jaw wakes up already angry. There are seven daily routines built for real life.
That is the upgrade if the masseter starter helped a little and you want guidance, not another DIY spiral.
Common questions
Can massage stop grinding?
No. It can help sore muscle feel less braced. It does not stop nighttime grinding.
Should I use massage or a night guard?
They are not a choice between equals. A guard protects teeth. Massage addresses muscle. If your dentist gave you a guard, keep it. Soft tissue work can sit beside it, not instead of it.
Why is my jaw sore in the morning?
Overnight clenching or grinding loads the chewing muscles. The masseter often feels it first. Soreness alone is not a diagnosis.
Should I massage after a grind night?
If the tissue is dully sore and nothing on the skip list is true, the outside starter can be reasonable. If it is sharp, swollen, or locked, leave it and get it checked.
Can massage make grinding worse?
Digging hard, working the joint, or pushing through sharp pain can irritate tissue. That can make the next day feel worse. Lighten up or stop.
When should I see a dentist?
Tooth damage, a new or worsening grind, locking, unexplained swelling, numbness, or pain that does not ease. Also if you already know you need that appointment.
Work with Brooke
The outside starter is a place to begin. You can do that today with the masseter guide.
If you want Brooke in your ear for breath, the full external sequence, and intra-oral work, Release Your Jaw is $247 once, lifetime access. Thirteen lessons, seven daily routines, no equipment.
Morning jaw soreness after grinding is common. A blog post will not stop the grind. What a class can do is teach the muscle map with stop rules, so you are not inventing care from a sore cheek and a search bar.
